Guidelines for Précis-Writing
1) Read the passage carefully and identify the points that will help in forming the summary. Examine the passage in detail, to make sure of the meaning of each sentence.
2) Make a note of the important points to be mentioned.
3) Supply a short title which will express the subject. Use your own words. Let the language be simple and direct.
4) Avoid using supporting information or giving examples unless it is essential. Add nothing; make no comment; correct no facts.
5) Stick to the message of the passage and also make sure that your summary answers to the given question.
6) Make a rough draft and Make the necessary changes in the rough draft in order to limit it to exact 50 words. Compare it carefully with the original to see that you have included all the important points. If it is too long, still further compress it by omitting unnecessary words. Correct all mistakes in spelling, grammar.
7) Correct sequence of tenses after the “verb of saying” in the past tense.
8) Great care must be taken to avoid lapsing in to direct speech- a very common fault. Some passages, however, are best summarized in direct speech.
