Interchanging Interrogative sentence to Assertive sentence and Vice versa


 In order to change an assertive sentence into the interrogative without changing its meaning, we have to add a negative if the assertive sentence is in the affirmative.

In order to change an assertive sentence into the interrogative without changing its meaning, we have to remove the negative if the assertive sentence is in the negative and add a question mark.


Change from Interrogative sentence to Assertive sentence : 
(answers are expected) 


1. Does Anil remember me? 
Ans. I wonder if Anil remembers me. 

2.
What is your seat number?  
Ans.
I would like to know what your seat number is. 

3. Didn't Dinesh go to the school? 
Ans. Dinesh went to the school. 

4. Would Sachin come here?
Ans. I wonder if Sachin would come here.
 

5. Do you think it will rain? 
Ans. I wonder if rain will come.

6. Who was your favourite player?
Ans. I would 
like to know who your favourite player was. 


7. How is it possible?

Ans. It is not possible.


(answers are not expected)  

1. Who can see air? 
Ans.  No one can see air. 

2.
Is this the way to behave?  
Ans. This is not the way to behave.
 

3.
What can refrain him?  
Ans. Nothing can refrain him.

4. Have Kapil anything to do?
Ans. Kapil have nothing to do.


5. Do you ever play basketball? 
Ans. You never play basketball.  

6.
 Can anyone find this?
Ans. No one can find this.

7. Does anyone worship the setting sun?
Ans. No one worships the setting sun.

8. Would he save me?
Ans. I wonder if he would save me.


Assertive to Interrogative: 
While changing from assertive to interrogative, use the question tag in the beginning.

1. He is very innocent.
Ans. Aren’t he very innocent?

2. He went to the temple.
Ans. Didn’t he go to the temple.

3. These animals are very funny.
Ans.
Aren’t animals very funny.

4. Coping is not a good habit.
Ans. Is coping a good habit?

5. Anil was not known for his kindness .
Ans. Was Anil known for his kindness ?

6. Love is blind.
Ans. Is love not blind ?

7. I can never win in this game.
Ans. Can I ever win in this game ? 


8. She had read a book of mine.

Ans. Hadn't she read a book of mine?


9. We'll have the freedom to go to park.
Ans. Won't w
e have the freedom to go to park.?



SHORT CUT METHOD TO MEMORIZE THE RULES: 

Interchange of Assertive and Interrogative Sentences:

Assertive

 Interrogative

1) Never

 Ever

2) Nothing 

Anything

3) Nothing but

Anything but/ what

4) Every + noun

Is there any + noun + who + negative

5)  Someone/ somebody/ everybody/ everyone/ no one/ nobody/ anybody/ anyone

who (Affirmative–Negative) (Negative–Affirmative)

6) If the auxiliary or helping verb is not available.

Using Do/Does/Did

  • Most of the time we should make the assertive (affirmative) sentence, negative interrogative, if we want to make interrogative.
