CHANGE THE VOICE
Voices
are of two types: active and passive.
Active Voice:
In the active voice, the subject performs the action expressed by the
verb.
Passive Voice:
In passive voice subject receives the action expressed by the verb.
CHANGE THE VOICE.
The teacher
shouted at the student. (Subject is doer - Active Voice.)
The student was shouted by the teacher. (Subject is
receiver - Passive Voice.)
General
rules of conversion active voice to passive voice:
1.
The subject in the active voice becomes the object
in the passive voice and the object in the active voice becomes the subject in
the passive voice.
2.
Put ‘by’ in front of the subject in the passive
voice.
Use 3rd form of verb + is/
am/ are/ was/ were/ been/ being according to the tense in passive voice.
General rules of
conversion from passive voice to active voice.
1.
The subject of passive voice becomes object in
active voice and the object in passive voice becomes the subject in active
voice.
2.
Remove the preposition ‘by’.
3. Use 1st form of the verb.

1. Shut the doors.
Ans. Let the doors be shutted.( use” let + be + Verb”)
2. Shut the window.
Ans. Let the window be shutted.

Rule: (You are requested + to + 1st form of verb + object).
1. Please have a
seat.
Ans. You are requested
to have a seat.
(c)
Suggestion
Passive
Rule: (subject + should be + 3rd form of the verb).
1. Always speak the
truth.
Ans. The truth should always be spoken.
(d)
Advice
Passive
Rule: (You are advised + to + object).
1. Study well.
Ans. You are advised to
study well.
(Change the voice for Interrogative Sentences)
If the question is interrogative, the answer must also be interrogative.1. Do you own the car?
Ans. Is the car own by you?
Interrogative

(a)Is/ am/ are.
Passive
rule:
Is/ am/ are + subject + 3rd form of verb + by + object ?
Active:
Is he driving a car?
Passive:
Is a car being driven by him?
(b)Does/ do.
Passive
rule:
Is/ am/ are + subject + 3rd form of verb + by + object?
Active:
Does he found a letter?
Passive:
Is a letter founded by him?
(c) Did.
Passive Rule:
was/ were + subject + 3rd form of verb + by + object?
Active:
Did Anil saw a lion?
Passive:
Was a lion seen by him?
(e) Has/ have/ had
Passive
Rule:
Has/ have/ had + subject + been + 3rd form of verb + by +
object?
Active: Has Ramesh eaten an apple?
Passive:
Has an apple been eaten by him?
(Change the voice for Prepositional Verbs)
If the question contains a verb followed by a preposition the answer
must have the same preposition.
1. He went to the garden.
Ans. The garden was went to by me.
(Change the voice for Modal Auxilaries)
If the question
contains a modal auxiliary, the answer must also have the same modal auxiliary. E.g.-
may/ can, etc.
Passive Rule: Modal
Auxiliary + subject + be + 3rd form of verb + by + object?
1. He must win the match.
Ans. The match must be won by him.
2. Can Ramesh sell this pen?
Ans. Can
this pen be sold by Ramesh.
Change the voice:
1) I see a dog.
Ans: A dog is seen by me.
2) I saw a dog.
Ans: A dog
was seen by me.
3) I will see a dog.
Ans: A dog will
be seen by me.
4) I have seen a dog.
Ans: A dog has been
seen by me.
5) I had seen a dog.
Ans: A dog had
been seen by me.
6) I will have seen a dog.
Ans: A dog will have been seen by me.
7) I am seeing a dog.
Ans: A dog
is being seen by me.
8) I was seeing a dog.
Ans: A

Change from Active to
Passive:
1.
Amit shouts at Bipin.
Ans. Bipin is shouted by Amit.
2.
They sold a car.
Ans.
A car was sold by them.
3. I am selling cars.
Ans. Cars is being sold by me.
4. They were selling the cars.
Ans. The cars were being sold by them.
5. Sanjay had played cricket.
Ans. Cricket had been played by Sanjay.
6. This display of inner strength touched Dr.Kalam deeply.
Ans. Dr.Kalam was deeply touched by this display of strength.
Change from Passive
to Active:
1.
The deer had been killed by lion.
Ans. Lion had killed the deer.
2.
The fish was sold by Sameer.
Ans.
Sameer sold the fish.
3.
This serial was shown on television.
Ans.
Television showed this serial.
4.
History have been taught by Rahul sir.
Ans. Rahul sir has taught history.
5.
This car was sold by Nitin.
Ans. Nitin sold this
car.

7. Past Perfect: 'had watered '

Active voice: Mihir had been watering the garden.
Passive voice: The garden had been being watered by Mihir.

Simple Future: 'will'
Active voice: Mihir will finish the work.
Passive voice: The work will be finished by Mihir.
10. Simple Future: 'is going to'
Active voice: Mihir is going to make a beautiful flower.
Passive voice: A beautiful flower is going to be made by Mihir.
11. Simple Present: 'clean/is
cleaned'
Active voice: Mihir cleans the house.
Passive voice: The house is cleaned by Mihir.
12. Present Continuous: 'is
reading/is being read'
Active voice: Arnav is reading the book.
Passive voice: The book is being read by Arnav.
13. Simple Past : 'broke/was broken'
Active voice: Arnav broke the plate.
Passive voice: The plate was broken by Arnav.
14. Past Continuous: 'was
helping/being helped'
Active voice: The young man was helping the old man.
Passive voice: The old man was being helped by the young man.
15. Present Perfect: 'have
studied'
Active voice: Students have studied all answers.
Passive voice: All answers has been studied by students.
16. Present Perfect Continuous: 'has
been doing'
Active voice:Rahul has been helping his mother.
Passive voice: His mother has been being helped by Rahul.
17. Past Perfect: 'had studied’
Active voice: Rahul had studied many languages.
Passive voice: Many languages had been studied by Rahul.
18. Past Perfect Continuous: 'had been
selling'
Active voice: Rahul had been selling the fish for two years.
Passive voice: The fish had been being sold by Rahul for two years.
19. Simple Future: 'will'
Active voice: Dog will finish his food.
Passive voice: The food will be finished by dog.
20. Simple Future: 'is going to'
Active voice: Bipin is going to make a big pizza tonight.
Passive voice: A big pizza is going to be made by Bipin tonight.

1. A poisoned arrow killed that animal.
Ans. That animal was killed by a poisoned arrow.
2. You have admitted about your involvement in robbery.
Ans. Your involvement in robbery have been admitted by you.
3 Science has now lessened the belief in magic.
Ans. The belief in magic has been now lessened by science.
4 I should not have been allowed to eat junk food.
Ans. They should not have allowed me to eat junk food.
5 Some students were left to run on the ground.
Ans. They left some students to run on the ground.
6. You yourself prepare the project.
Ans. The project is prepared by you yourself.
7. Won’t Rohan have stopped him?
Ans Won’t he have been stopped by Rohan?
8. He took the journals and gave it to teacher.
Ans. The journals was taken and given to teacher by him.
9. He gave me a car.
Ans. A car was given to me by him.
10. I have eaten a pizza.
Ans. A pizza has been eaten by me.
11. My doctor advised me to go home.
Ans. I was advised to go home by my doctor.
12. The television brings the world into our house.
Ans. The world is brought into our house by the television.
13. We saw a tree bare of all leaves.
Ans. A tree bare of all leaves was seen by me.
14. I have heard that piece many times since that day.
Ans. That piece has been heard by me many times since that day.
15. I cut out walking for the next three weeks.
Ans. Walking was cut out by me for the next three weeks.
16. All great religions teach us to care for our children.
Ans. We are taught to care for our children be all great religions.
17. Your brother will give you.
Ans. You will be given by your brother.
18. I am left in complete awe.
Ans. It leaves me in complete awe.
19. They had selected a site in Mumbai.
Ans. A site had been selected in Mumbai by them.
