FINITE AND NON-FINITE VERBS

 A verb is word that shows doing (action), being or having done.

FINITE VERBS                                                  ( show the tense)

NON-FINITE VERBS  
( does not show the tense)

I play cricket everyday. (Present)

 I like to play.

I played cricket. (Past)

My friend has a laughing mirror.

I will play cricket tommorow. (Future)

Laughing is a good exercise.


 

NON – FINITE VERBS

 

             Present participle

                verb + ing

               Past Participle - 

                    ed, en, t, n

                (Note that many past                             participles in English are                     irregular and don't use the -                     suffix.)

         Functions as verb or                        adjective

1.      She has nagging nature.

                (Adjectival)

2.         Shouting loudly, teacher             came here. (Verbal)

Infinitives: to + verb

For example:

1. He likes to play.

 2. He want to say.

 

Gerunds: verb + ing

Functions as a noun

1. Laughing is best exercise.

(Subject)

2. He likes cycling. (Object)

 (Tip:

If the 'ing' verb answers the question 'what', it is a Gerund. If not it is a present participle.)
