Homophones and Homographs

Homophones means two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling, for example new and knew. Each of a set of symbols denoting the same sound or group of sounds. 

Homographs are words with the same spelling but having more than one meaning.

Examples of Homophones:

2.   Paper / Pepper	There are papers on the floor. I love green peppers.
3.   Wait / Weight	Wait for me when you are going. My weight is 65 kg.
4.   Pale / Pail	Sick people always looks pale. A plastic beach pail was lying on the sand.
5.   Filling / Feeling	This lake is filling with the heavy rain.  I have a feeling he is wrong.
6.   Of / Off	I'm aware of it. The wind blew her hat off.
7.   Peace / Piece	We just want to live in peace. I bought a piece of cake from the bakery.
8.   Here / Hear	Here comes my dog. Can you hear properly?
9.   Great/ Grate	What a great movie it was? There was a fire in the grate.
10.Current / Currant	There is current in this wire.  Since I love raisins, the taste of ripe currant in my dish was delicious.
11.There / Their	There are flowers everywhere. That's their new cat.
12. Once / Ones	I asked him to leave at once.  It is no one's fault.
13. Rite / Right	Praying is an important part of religious rites. The water came right up to our doorstep.
14. Weekly / Weakly	This magazine comes weekly.  He was thin and of weakly health.
15. Sleep / Slip	8 hours sleep is good for health. Thieves managed to slip away unnoticed.
16. Thought / Taught	He thought today there is exam. Teacher taught students very nicely.
17. Desert / Dessert	Cactus only grows in the wild in the desert.   A dessert is the sweet course at the end of a meal.
18. Deer / Dear	Deer is a herbivorous animal. I am writing a letter to my dear friend.
19. Too / Two	It was too late to go to market. Bring me two pizza.
20. Realised / Released	He realised his mistake. Prisoners were released from jail.
21. Better / Batter	He scored better marks this time. Dip the fish in the batter, then drop it into the hot oil.
22. Need / Knead	You need ice to make ice-cream. You knead the dough before baking it.
23. Hole / Whole	I have a big hole in my jeans. He ate Whole cake at a time.
24. Effect / Affect	This medicine has no side effects. One mistake can affect all the worker’s productivity.
25. Break / Brake	Children break this pot easily. Please apply car’s brake slowly.
26. Bear / Bare	They found a bear in jungle. Don't walk around outside in your bare feet.
27. Cent /  Scent	I didn't get paid a cent. These flowers have no scent.
28. dear / deer	How are you my dear brother? Deer are roaming freely in jungle.
29. die / dye	He claims he's not afraid to die. Why not dye your T-shirts?
30.  flour / flower	Mix the flour with five eggs. He has a flower garden in front of the house.
31. hair / hare	He is having few hairs on head. Hares are my favourite animal.
32. meat / meet	Some people do not eat meat. Can we meet tomorrow?
33. weak / week	He is too weak to walk. This week we will go for picnic.
34. Stationary /   Stationery	I was able to ride the stationary bike down the street. I need to buy more stationery for my class.
35. Sail / Sale	They went for a sail.  Shopkeepers kept jeans for sale.
36. Pray / Prey	Pray to God every day. Lion found its prey in jungle.
37. Mail / Male	My sister mailed me. This is male’s room.
38. Know / No	I know what you are doing. Please say no to students.
39. Eye / I	Kapil kept an eye on his brother. I was standing here.
40. Cell / Sell	There are cells in this torch. Please sell this car to me.
41. One / Won	One day, we will win this match. We won this cricket match.
42. Peace / Piece	There is peace between two countries. Please give me a piece of paper.
43. Sea / See	Today the sea is rough. Please see this paper.
44. Some / Sum	Please give me some papers. This sum is very difficult.
45. Tail / Tale	Don’t pull dog’s tail. That's an old tale.

46. Breath / Breadth

She caught her breath and sat up sharply. Any rectangle has length and breadth.

4.   Bank – Bank	I am working in this bank. He jumped and swam to opposite bank.
5.   Address - Address	I can give you the address of my friend. That letter was addressed to Rahul.
6.   Back - Back	I’ll be back in a minute. He showed his back to his brother.
7.   Bow – Bow	She had a red bow in her hair. Please bow in front of God.
8.   Can – Can	Please bring me a can of cold drink. I can stand here.
9.   Capital – Capital	Delhi is capital of India. You should write in capital letters.
10.Compound – Compound	Water is compound of hydrogen and oxygen. A compound sentence contains conjuctions.
11.Cool – Cool	He drinks cool water. When his tempers is cooled, then we will come.
12. Date – Date	Please write date on this letter. Rohan went on date.
13. Digest – Digest	He can digest any food. Can I have science digest.
14. Discharge – Discharge	Patients were discharged from hospital. Sewage is discharged directly into the sea.
15. Drop – Drop	There is a drop of water on this plate. A mango dropped from the tree.
16. Down – Down	The mango fell down. He down the tea in one gulp.
17. Duck – Duck	The ceiling was so low I had to duck my head. In the park there was duck.
18. Letter – Letter	There is a letter for you. Write the letter in upper case.
19. Novel – Novel	What a novel idea it is. He has lot of novels at home.
20. Live – Live	We live in Mumbai. Live music concerts was there in ground.
21. Minute – Minute	I will be there in 10 minutes. Bacteria are so minute that we cannot see.
22. Ring – Ring	I have a golden ring. She will ring me tomorrow.
23. Extract – Extract	I’ve only seen short extract from the film. Police extract information about robbery from neighbors.
24. Fan – Fan	He is a big fan of this actor. He bought a new fan in his house.
25. Fast – Fast	He broke his fast after eating an apple. He is running fast.
26. Fine – Fine	My parents are fine. Police levied heavy fine on offenders.
27. Fit – Fit	Clothes are fit for him. You should be fit to run in Marathon.
28. Fly – Fly	The pilot was instructed to fly the plane. There was a fly in tea.
29. Foot – Foot	The taxpayer has to foot the bill. His foot got hurt while running.
30. Firm – Firm	He is working in CA’s firm. Child is holding firmly to his mother.
31. House – House	His house is very beautiful. The museum is housed in the South Mumbai.
32. Incense – Incense	The decision incensed the workforce. Incense stick is burned in front of God.
33. Increase – Increase	There has been a marked increase in marksheet. Population has increased by 25 percentage.
34. Invite – Invite	I thank my friend for his invite. They have invited me to go to party.
35. Lead – Lead	In pencil, there is lead. He took the lead as caption in cricket match.
36. Leaves – Leaves	This train leaves at 9.00 p.m. Bring 10 neem leaves.
37. Tear – Tear	He has tears in his eyes. I will tear this page.
38. Sign – Sign	Cough can be sign of T.B. His sign is not proper.
39. Watch – Watch	I have brought a new watch from this shop. I like watching a new movie.
40. Mind – Mind	I hope you don’t mind the noise. There are new idea in my mind.
41. Nail – Nail	My clothes are hanging on this nail. Her nails are very beautiful.
42. Park – Park	I do jogging in this park early in morning. There is car park near my house.
43. Rose – Rose	I have a rose garden. He rose from his chair after seeing Principal.
44. Subject – Subject	Maths is his favorite subject. I have nothing to say on this subject.
45. Tie – Tie	Robbers tied the hands of watchmen. I wear tie and coat at work.

46. Train – Train

I am going by train this evening. You should train your younger brother how to behave.

47. Bore – Bore

My friend's aunty is a big bore. You should bore the pain without crying.

48. Tear – Tear

There was a tear in her eyes. The small child started to tear the page in anger.

49. Long – Long

This monkey's tail is very long. I long for the carefree days of my childhood.
